PORT: A GENERAL DISCUSSION FROM THE CELLAR
Three years ago, our winemaker Blake Lougheed embarked on an exciting new cellar endeavor—creating Port-style wines right here in Northern Michigan. These complex, fortified wines offer something unique for both sweet wine lovers and serious wine drinkers alike.
“The process involves stopping a red wine fermentation while it's active by adding high-proof spirits to the tank (distilled from wine the year prior). Bringing the alcohol content up to 20% kills the yeast and preserves a unique flavor moment in time.”

This traditional method, originating in Portugal, locks in rich, bold flavors while giving the wine incredible aging potential.
What is Port-Style Wine?
A more general term for "Port wine" is fortified wine, since "Port" can only be used for wines made in Portugal. Fortified wines involve the addition of grape spirits to stop fermentation early, preserving natural sweetness and creating a smooth, high-alcohol wine (typically around 20% ABV).
Blake sees Port-style wines as an opportunity to captivate a new audience—especially those who typically drink dry wines but enjoy an occasional complex, sweet sipper.
“These wines are not very commonly made in Michigan, though they can be found. Our goal is to make some really interesting ones to provide something different than many other wineries.”

Why Port-Style Wines Are So Unique
Incredible Aging Potential – These wines can last decades—possibly 30 years if wax-dipped—continuing to evolve in complexity over time.
Minimal Sulfites – The natural preservative effect of the higher alcohol means we can use little to no sulfites, making it a great option for those sensitive to them.
Rare and Experimental – This past harvest, we tried something truly special: a white Port-style wine made from Riesling.
“It turned out cool. It drinks like a margarita (minus the lime). The ABV is 20%. It's rich and sweet. I usually don't drink sweet wines, but for some reason, this wine intrigues me.”

With its bold flavors, exceptional aging potential, and versatility, Port-style wine is something every wine lover should experience.
